The state, a significant contributor to the Indian economy, has witnessed spectacular economic growth for decades. It has become the second largest economic powerhouse in India and has become one of the most sought-after investment destinations due to its strategic location, conducive business environment, state-of-the-art infrastructure, proactive governance and favourable ecosystem. AEROSPACE & DEFENCE Home to India’s First Defence Corridor; expected to benefit sub-sectors such as Engineering, Heavy Engineering, Aerospace & Defence, and Aviation Sector Aerospace Park in Sriperumbudur (Vallam-Vadagal) with an Advanced Computing and Design Engineering Centre (ACDEC) is being set up to form a strong base for supporting large OEMs. ​​> More than 120 aerospace manufacturing companies have their presence in the State. > More than 700 suppliers to various defence PSUs are operating in Tamil Nadu. > More than 5000 aerospace engineers graduate every year from Tamil Nadu. > Technicians and engineers from Tamil Nadu are employed in large numbers in aerospace companies in India and also across the globe.

Tamil Nadu is in the forefront amongst all states in implementing the latest information technology initiatives and e-governance programs by using highly talented, tech savvy and skilled human resources available in the State. AGRO AND FOOD PROCESSING Tamil Nadu has well established agriculture educational universities and research institutions across the state (Tamil Nadu Agricultural University)The State has four Agri Export Zones and has plans to set up one Ultra Mega and nine Mega Food Parks. In India, Tamil Nadu is the 2nd largest producer of Poultry & Dairy, 2nd largest producer of Coconut, 3rd largest producer of Tea & Coffee, 7th largest producer of Fruits. > Tamil Nadu contributes 7% to India’s food processing. > Tamil Nadu is the state with the highest egg production. > India's leading producer of spices and cashew nuts. > Leading producer of Papaya, Sapota & Pomegranate. > 2nd Indian state in Banana cultivation. AUTOMOBILE AND AUTO COMPONENTS With a well-developed Auto Ecosystem, Tamil Nadu is one of the top 10 Automobile Hubs in the world. The State contributes 21% to India’s Automobile Exports and accounts for 35% of India’s Auto Component Production. > Tamil Nadu is a top 10 automobile hub in the world. > 45% of India's motor vehicle / car exports. > 35% of India’s auto component production. > Largest tyre manufacturer in the country > Chennai City is the Automobile Capital of India. > Chennai has an annual capacity of 1.71 million car units. > Kamarajar Port , has dedicated berths for auto exports. > Mahindra Research Valley – Asia’s largest Auto R&D centre. > Chennai has capacity to produce three cars every minute. > Chennai has capacity to produce one truck every 2 minutes. >Chennai capacity to produce one motorbike every 6 seconds. ​CHEMICALS & PETROCHEMICALS The State ranks 3rd in India’s Total Chemical Output, accounting for ~6% of National Production. > The State has 2588 Chemical Manufacturing Factories. > Established Polymer Industry Ecosystem Home to over 8000 small and medium enterprises. > A Polymer Industries Park is being established by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation. > The State has the prominent Plastics/Polymer Research Institutions (CIPET – Institute of Plastic technology, School for Advanced research in Polymers). ELECTRONICS & HARDWARE Tamil Nadu ranks 2nd in India in Computer, Electronics and Optical Products manufacturing, accounting for 16% of National Production. Computers & Peripheral Equipment accounted for 62% of the Total Electronics Output in Tamil Nadu. The state ranks 3rd in India in terms of Electronic Exports. Tamil Nadu offers a huge market for downstream industries such as Automotive, Mobile phones, Computer Hardware, Industrial and Strategic Electronics etc. HEAVY ENGINEERING Tamil Nadu ranks 3rd in India in production of General Purpose and Special Purpose Machinery, accounting for ~7% of the total production. Ranks 2nd in India in Heavy Engineering Exports. Heavy Engineering exports from Tamil Nadu grew at a CAGR of 8% between 2013-14 and 2017-18 and stood at USD 2.49 billion in 2017-18. > A Heavy Engineering Industrial Park spread across an area of 700 acres is situated in Ponneri Taluka of Tiruvallur district. > Presence of top heavy engineering companies in and around Chennai like Doosan, Komatsu, Kobelco, Gamesa, etc. > 3 SEZs supporting the growth of Heavy Engineering sector. Tamil Nadu ​is home to world’s leading IT/ITeS organizations like TCS, Infosys, CTS, IBM, Accenture, World Bank, Amazon etc. > Investments worth USD 6.15 billion were made in 2018. > The sector provides direct employment to nearly 400,000 people & indirect employment to 750,000 people. > The state has 22 approved IT parks and 246 IT Parks in pipeline with a built-up space of 146 million sq. ft. > 37% of the total engineering graduates in the State are from Computer Science/ IT/ Electronics/ Communication fields. > The state is amongst the few states in India to have an integrated IT infrastructure consisting of State Data Centre, Statewide Area Network, Cloud Computing Infrastructure and Disaster Data Recovery Centre. > The State possesses world class IT Communication Infrastructure - 3 Submarine Cables of 14.8 TBps that connect Chennai to the world. PHARMACEUTICALS & BIOTECHNOLOGY Tamil Nadu is the 5th largest Pharmaceutical Manufacturing State in the Country. The State accounts for over 10% of National Pharma Production. Tamil Nadu is the most active state in ensuring free supply of medicines in government clinics and hospitals. > Pharmaceuticals exports from Tamil Nadu stood at USD 422.53 million in 2017-18. > A Medi Park project is being established by HLL Lifecare Ltd, a Government of India Enterprise and TIDCO. > Research and Development Centers are established by world class companies such as: Pfizer, Dow Chemicals, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, Chemech Laboratories, Shasun Chemicals, and Apex Laboratories. > Tamil Nadu has India’s largest Agricultural University with 36 Agro Technology Research Stations Supporting in Biotech. > TICEL Bio Park in Chennai provides world class Laboratory Infrastructure and services for Biotech R&D. RENEWABLE ENERGY Tamil Nadu ranks 9th globally in terms of Renewable Power Output. Tamil Nadu is the leader in Renewable Energy Sector among all other Indian states with a Total Installed Capacity of 11,113 MW. Tamil Nadu has an Installed Capacity of 8,152 MW of Wind Power. > The State has harnessed around 13,000 million units of Wind Energy during the year 2017-18. > The State harnessed 2,905 million units of Solar Energy in 2018. >Due to extensive use of Renewable Energy, the state has reduced about 5,406 million tonnes of Carbon Emission (by reducing Hard Coal).

SKILL DEVELOPMENT The Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC) has identified many Central/ State Government Institutions and Agencies along with Industrial Houses for imparting Short Term Skill Development Training Programmes. TNSDC has trained 227,106 youth in the last 5 years. > TNSDC trained more than 105,000 candidates in 2018. > There are 88 Government ITIs in the state. > 484 Private ITIs affiliated to National Council for Training. > 385 self-financing industrial schools to fulfill local demand of industries for skilled labour. > Tamil Nadu is home to the highest (40) number of 3-star ITIs in India. > Tamil Nadu is home to 5 out of the top 10 Govt. ITIs in the country. > Each year 30% of the seats are reserved for women candidates in ITIs. > Industrial training is imparted in 51 engineering trades & 21 non engineering trades. TEXTILES AND APPARELS Tamil Nadu leads all the States in the country with 2,027 textile mills and 24 million spindles which includes 6 Co-operative Spinning Mills and 7 National Textiles Corporation Mills. ​> Tamil Nadu is called the Yarn Bowl of India since it produces 40% of Total Yarn in India. > Tamil Nadu contributes to 1/3rd of the Textile Business in India making it the Textile Valley of India. > Tamil Nadu is called the Yarn Bowl of India since it produces 40% of the total yarn in India. > Tamil Nadu ranks: 1st in production of Cotton Yarn, 1st in export of Cotton Yarn, 2nd in production of Blended Yarn. > Tamil Nadu has the highest number of textile mills in India. > Out of 13,000 garment units in India, 6,500 units are located in Tamil Nadu. > Nike has a significant presence in Tamil Nadu, manufacturing 160 million shoes annually. > Footwear and Leather Products SEZ (154 acre) is a sector-specific SEZ in Irungattukottai, Kancheepuram district.
