Share some insight into your background.
I’m the former CEO of Green Growth Brands, leading the company from its IPO through January 2019, reaching a nearly billion-dollar market cap. Prior to that, I had a successful career in packaged goods, where I spent 18 years at Clorox, with the last eight serving as president. Before that, I spent seven years at Brita as managing director of the North America foodservice and retail businesses. I joined HAVN Life in 2020, and hope to use some of my insight from past leadership experience in the cannabis industry to create an effective path to success for the company.
Tell us about some of the recent successes at HAVN Life.
We’ve been lucky enough to have several successes at HAVN Life in the past twelve months, first by quickly acquiring a Section 56 Exemption from Health Canada to begin developing methods of standardized, quality-controlled analysis of therapeutic compounds found in mushrooms containing psilocybin. Since then, we’ve set up a fully-operational growing and research facility in Jamaica and developed a new method for rapid psilocybin testing that enables us to precisely and accurately measure psilocybin content in under five minutes. We’re also producing powdered psilocybin for use in clinical trials and psychedelic-assisted therapies for our various partners. On the retail side of the company, HAVN Life acquired a production facility in Richmond B.C. this spring, and we’ve just had a successful launch of our first line of natural health products, which are now available through our e-commerce site, as well as brick and mortar locations such as Nesters Market and Choices Markets, with more partnerships in the works. It’s been a very busy and productive year for us, despite working through a global pandemic.
Talk to us about the role of R&D at HAVN Life.
As a company, HAVN Life is built around innovation. From the end-to-end research and extraction of psilocybin that we do at our lab in Jamaica, to our development of natural health products that feature high-quality extractions from functional mushrooms and plants, our company is pursuing a unique business model that is focused on finding new and innovative solutions to optimize human potential.
What makes HAVN Life a special company?
At HAVN Life, we believe in people and their potential. We envision a world where everyone is operating at peak mental performance, free from the stresses and imbalances that hold us back. We are on a mission to shift mental health paradigms through evidence-informed research that supports human performance and empowers our customers to achieve their full potential. On the retail side, that means continuing to develop high quality natural health products that can boost immune function and support cognitive function. As more of the population becomes curious about non-pharmaceutical, traditional medicine, there is a growing demand for natural, plant- and fungi-based compounds. By honoring ancient healing traditions and applying modern scientific methods, we are able to create products that serve customers in a wide variety of ways.

Please describe your approach to leadership.
My decades of experience in consumer packaged goods and cannabis have obviously given me a great deal of insight into how to build a successful company. But with HAVN Life, our mission is much more personal for me. One of my sons was badly injured in a car accident, and later became addicted to opioids as a result. His ability to access legal cannabis very likely saved his life, and that experience showed me just how ill-equipped our current mental health paradigms are for the challenges so many of us face. Coming out of these personal struggles, I have a newfound sense of purpose, which has enabled me to inspire my team and work tirelessly to achieve our goals.
Tell us about CSR at HAVN Life.
We are committed to Corporate Responsibility on many fronts.
One of our key partnerships is with Heroic Hearts, an organization that provides psychedelic-assisted therapy to veterans suffering from PTSD and actively advocates for the decriminalization of psychedelic compounds. With chapters in the UK, US and now Canada, Heroic Hearts is leading the way for veterans to have access to alternative treatments.
Having recently opened a growing facility in Jamaica, HAVN Life is working with the government of Jamaican in order to create employment by establishing a psychedelics industry in this country as our research and production grows. We also donate psilocybin to educational institutions who are conducting psychedelic-assisted clinical research.
I’m also a board member and financial supporter of The Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group (CDPRG), a UK-based not-for-profit working to have psilocybin and other restricted compounds reclassified by the government and allow use for various indications where efficacy has been shown.
Describe HAVN Life's role in your industry.
HAVN Life is part of a global community taking an active role in formulations and research for therapies which have shown effectiveness in addressing mental health and performance. Mental health and wellness is top of mind, particularly as we emerge from a global pandemic that has been isolating and destabilizing for many. As consumer interest is shifting away from pharmaceuticals in favour of sustainably resourced compounds derived from fungi and plant medicines, HAVN Life is helping people connect to their potential and thrive.
